Yes you do. Also have to pass a test and then get put on a waiting list based on the test score. I have worked at the post office.

As far as I am aware, a GED or diploma is not a requirement for people who work for the USPS. Several members in my family work there, but they do all have a diploma so I've never thought to consider the question. I worked there for a while, but in a different department, but again, I had a diploma so I never thought to consider the question. The USPS website says only that one must be 18 years old, or 16 with a diploma, have basic competency in reading, be a citizen, etc. To get a position as a mail carrier you generally have to sign up for the waiting list, and take a battery of tests which show your abilities to quickly read, scan and sort information, along with other basic competencies. There are study guides that can be used to help prepare for the testing. Some are provided prior to testing, but I believe others can be acquired, though I am not sure where those resources can be located at the moment. A GED, at least, will always help, in any job you want to take on. You should look into getting one if you don't have one currently. They can be attained very easily, at your own pace. Get a book and study it and take the tests every week, you could do it in a month or 6 weeks.

My friend is a mailman and he doesn't have either. I think you just have to take their tests and pass them, no prerequisites.
