Where is good places to volunteer?

  • I would like to deal with humans more than animals, in this aspect. I'm not good at this stuff, thinking of where to go and ... I don't mind helping sick people, but I'm not a clown for kids or anything like that. (I'm a guy, is what I'm trying to say).

  • Answer:

Try http://www.volunteermatch.org/ they'll help you narrow down your options based upon where you live and what types of groups you're interested in working with.

Big Brothers. You don't have to be a clown. I'm sure that there is a little boy who would like the un-clowny you. Its one hour a week and you help out a little boy who needs a positive male influence. you'd be suprised what it feels like to have a little kid wanna be like you!

I've recently discovered "Me to We" through the book with the same name. Run by young volunteers in North America and Canada - now going oversees - they are the culmination of the original "Free the Children" NGO which is focused on liberating children from labor. By making schools for them and changing communities. The best thing about these people is their spirit, learning, and philosophy. And while we're at it, the book ME TO WE: Finding Meaning in a Material World (Sept 2006) is an awesome read. It's human, interesting, exciting, and written in jargon-free simple language. You can also use the Taking It Global search engine to look up NGOs in your area (of interest). Happy volunteering!

Hello kendrickf... NO, U need not be a clown to any KIDS place U volunteer. In fact at a place called DOWNS SYNDROME is the best place for U because they are children & adults to care for & mind & help & "smile" about with. DS people, kids & adults alike are not really mentally retarded at all in fact they are SPECIAL PEOPLE & need real UNDERSTANDING & PATIENCE ALL THE TIME FOR THEM TO OVERCOME THEIR OWN FRUSTRATION THEY THEMSELVES ARE DEALING WITH. If you have the CARE & LOVE & PATIENCE & TIME, then this is the place for U. I have seen DS people children & adults who are self taught, by seeing them making an effort to tie their shoe lace, read a book or look at pictures, chat & talk to parents & friends & some are literally smart & only the OUTLOOKS DECIEVE U. Try this place & U will notice how smart some of them are & how kind & friendly & helpful too if not those living still with their family. The DS people whom U at the care & nursing homes visit & see, are perhaps not so fortunate & less "mentally alert" as those that are still cared for by they parents. It is the parents of wealthy in some that have sent them to these homes to avoid "embarassment". Just check this place out & U will love to be there after U have given so much love to these who can respond to your care. GOD BLESS!!
