Should I include the volunteer work on my resume?

Year 11 Post GCSE Volunteer work [NEED HELP]?

  • Ok so my parents are getting really tough at me and going on at how i need to add more to my resume or portfolio to show i have a wider interest in my life.. I need to demonstrate to future employees or University; if i go, that i have a broader interest and have more than just my GCSE and A level results. I'm 16 and taking my GCSE's May-June this year and i need something to fill a 2 week period after my exams. I'd really like to do volunteer work abroad perhaps in the Americas, if not then in the UK is fine. If not volunteer work, what else can i do that will boost my resume? Any suggestion please :D I'm not the nerdy or intellectual type, nor am i stupid and i am predicted atleast 5 A's in my GCSE but my biggest interests and hobbies include: - Anything athletic or relation to Physical Education and Diet. play football 4 times a week for school and club, and compete on the athletics team, especially long distance cross country of 1500m races. If i'm not at school or watching T.V, Xbox i'm playing sport or at the Gym because its what i enjoy most and have a Keane interest in. - If theres one academic subject i enjoy, next to sports education its Business Studies. I've thought about being an entrepreneur one day, but to make that happen requires more than just a thought. - Anything helping/working with deprived or poor kids - Any 'projects' helping restore rundown or new projects etc - i'm good working in a team due to all the team sports i play so i don't have a problem being interactive and social - These are just instant thoughts i'm really not sure, please suggest what i can do! Please help me because i'm really stuck for ideas and feel like i have limited opportunity - also if i don't come up with something before next Friday my mums going to send me to some course i do not have one bit of interest in at all! PLEASE HELP ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE REALLY HELPFUL THANKS!!

  • Answer:

I'm struggling for ideas myself but I can only think of helping to manage/train a childrens football team. It's either that or volunteer in a charity shop which can get very boring. As a uni student myelf (I go to a top 30 uni in the country) you don't need so much work experience until the summer holidays after you finish college and only if you are planning to do a medicine, law, vetinary and teaching degree. Apart from that work experience does not matter at all. You get so many chances to participate in work experience whilst you are at uni.
