Where should I start volunteering?

I want to start volunteering, where do I start?

  • I would like to start volunteering, for a non-profit type organization, in or near my community. Where do find local volunteer opportunities? I've volunteered before, and would like to find a long term, teen geared volunteer opportunity, What do I need to start, and what safe web sites have information to link me with safe (!) volunteering opportunities? Also would I need a resume (sort of thing), and where could I find useful tips on writing a resume? Lastly, should I contact representatives for volunteering opportunities through email, or should I stick with phone contact?

  • Answer:

In order to connect with the organization that best fits your needs and interests, I would suggest that you work through your local volunteer center. These groups can match you with the organization(s) that best fit your talents, donations, and time commitment/requirements. The first thing I would recommend is to contact your local volunteer center. You can find them through the Hands On Network or the Points of Light Foundation: http://www.handsonnetwork.org/our-network/ http://pointsoflight.org/centers/find_center.cfm As for the resume, it all depends upon the volunteer opportunity that you are seeking. I didn't need a resume for any of the standard projects that I've been working on for the past couple of years (tutoring kids, working at the museum, working at the children's shelter, etc.) The only time I needed a resume was right before I was accepted for a volunteer position as a board member on the Board of Directors for one of the local non-profits. There are many programs available to help you put together a resume. However, when applying for a non-profit board, it is always advisable to put all of your non-traditional items (ie, volunteer work, charitable time contributions, etc) in this version of your resume. In many cases these days, the contact method doesn't matter as much. Phone contact will probably be a little faster with most of the non-profits and volunteer centers.

It has been so wonderful of you for considering to be a volunteer. If all the people having the mindset like you, if a hundred, thousand or all, the world would be a better place to live. The world would be a perfect arena of many things that was generated by love, peace, and hope. I am so proud to know that there is still a person like you out there. Volunteer activity also known as community work, which it means we help others in appropriate way to solve matters or to get things done without requiring any returns or rewards, your energy is free of charged. To get starting with a community work, it is important that you have the value of serving in yourself. All the desires should come from yourself naturally without forces. You do with all of your heart and expect less form others. If you are still studying in college, you may join any clubs that perform much alike to community service. They are such as girl's scout, boy's scout, St. John, Red Cross and Crescent Society (RCCS), Interact Club and so on. Community work actually does not really mean that you have to join all those clubs. Being a honest and sincere volunteer such as helping teachers, other students, helping your neighbours, helping your relatives or friends, all are categorized as a volunteer work. But it is an indirectly work. One thing to bear in mind that when doing volunteer work, you should not expect to become famous because of your good deeds. Good deed means give more than you take and expect less. Well while we were doing volunteer work, we must be carefull as well, i mean not to become someone's slave or being make used by those cunning people. You are doing volunteer work but you must have your principle. Above all, that is the simple description and volunteer work that you can find in a school or indirectly in your routine life. But how about if you wanted to go further, why not you get an attachment to any orphanage, old folks house, and pursue advanced as a volunteer in St. John or RCCS? These are the easy way to get involved. Involving in these could be permanant. St. John for example is such a big society also. At he same time of involving you get to learn something new like applying first aid. You will be helping many people after all. To contact the representatvive for volunterring oppurtunities, it is recommended that that you make a phone called and make an appointment to meet up. It is better to have it like this so that both of you can clarify all the important matters together. Email is actually a good way but it is not recommended. Some organization is busy of replying email, therefore, you might not get a feedback. Your good background of community work is useful for your job application because certain job or career they look for that quality. So you may include this in your resume. To get a resume writing method, you can try out Yahoo search engine. Type "RESUME WRITING". You will be able to get many results of teaching or guideline to write a proper resume. I have years of voluneer experience and have never been asked for a resume because it is not a paid job. Make a list of organizations where you want to volunteer. Make sure your mom and dad approve your list. Ask if there is an age requirement. Sometimes nursing homes need volunteers. Call the organization and ask what the procedure is to volunteer. Red Cross uses volunteers, thee may be an age requirement. You can also volunteer at anAnimal Shelter for dogs in your city.

You can start anywhere in your community -- the volunteer opportunities are out there, ask around. I have done alot of volunteer work over the years. I have done it for organizations I had an interest in. Some businesses accept volunteers to help with mailers they are sending out, I have done that. I got a list of volunteer opportunities from a county office one time when I was looking to volunteer again, investigate in your area. I have helped prepare food and sort clothes at an organization that helps the needy, helped send out mailers at my church and, volunteered at a wildlife care center; I hope this gives you some ideas. Just make some phone calls and you will find you can help out somewhere. You do not need a resume since you are not under employment. If you have volunteered before you should know that you do not need to provide a resume.

I certainly do not know in what city you live, but I would strongly suggest that you can start by volunteering as I have done for many years -- at meal sites, better known as soup kitchens! No resume is required, just ambition......There you set up tables & chairs, put out place mats and plastic silverware, help serve the meals, and then throw trash away, help put away tables & chairs, and then help by cleaning the floor. Many teenagers do this - I have seen them do this for years. Many of them are either in college or they are applying to college, and yes - volunteering at meal sites does look good on a college application-! Many times a person in charge of a soup kitchen will write a letter of commendation for the particular teenager to help him or her in their application to college. This is different -- it is not the "usual" as in playing football in high school or being a high school cheerleader. Helping out in the community by volunteering like this can possibly make you stand out a bit. As I say - I have known teenagers over a number of years how have already done this! In my areas - soup kitchen sites are posted in the public library. The Council of Churches runs the ones that I am familiar with - you can certainly start there! Good Luck!!

Do what you like, and what your specialty's are, I live on Long Island, I saved someone from drowning last summer, it was so bad that the Coast Guard needed my assistance, we pulled it off and saved the boy (Jet ski accident) I was there for them ! They asked me if I would like to join the Coast Guard Aux., "We could use a few good men like you", so here I am, I go out on Patrol boats a lot "Hunting For Trouble", it's so much fun, the people are "Boat People" just like me, so we all have a great time..... "Service Above Self" When it's nasty on the water, and everyone else is Heading "IN", WE'RE HEADING OUT !
