What is an average day like at job corps?

How is life at Job Corps?

  • Im 19 and planning on going to Job Corps to get my GED and train for nursing. I just want to know how is day to day life and is it fun? i know its not going to be candyland but will I like it? I heard someone say it was like jail but was thinking they might have trouble being told what to do. Im not like that.

  • Answer:

I worked with some Job Corps student in New Orleans, building houses post-Katrina. They all said that it's hard work - sometimes boring work. Some of the JCorps volunteer had 3 months of cafeteria duty. They also mentioned the pay was low and there's not much time for recreation. However, they all said that they would re-enlist because they made so many good friends and found themselves maturing. Overall, they said the experience was worthwhile and would recommend it. It was the thing I remember most about volunteering in New Orleans -- how the Job Corps student made me proud and hopeful for the future. Go for it.
