To do a charity in kenya?

I need help with my charity!?

  • Well, its not really a charity, but the thing is, i went to africa this summer, and visited a few orphanages, toured them and met the children. Now im sending them packages monthly, or im trying to. I was about to send my first one, but to send a size able package to Kenya is way more expensive then i initially thought, that and the cost for school supplies, food and clothing. Ive sold some of my things, and using my small allowance (Im only 13 and dont have a job), and i need money to do this, and i have NO desire to quit, especially after giving my word. Ive been passionate about this for 4 years and no finally have a opportunity and need to stick to it. Please help, its not a charity really so i cant apply for any grants, and i also need to know whats the cheapest way to send a flat rate package to Kenya. How can i raise a good amount of money? I already know bake sales:) im hoping once i get the hang of this, to be able to turn this into a real cause/ charity.. THANKS!!:)

Ask relatives to help as part of your birthday or Christmas gifts. Ask your mom to help you think of ways to earn money, maybe doing extra chores, raking leaves for neighbors come fall, helping neighbors you know with yard work or other chores (be sure you and your parents know these people for safety sake), See if your church or Sunday School class will help sponsor a couple of mailings a year...if they will help that way then donations to help can also be tax deductible through the church. If that happens through the church or through a civic organization (like Kiwanis, American Legion, a community club etc) then donations would be tax deductible. The post office can tell you the cheapest way to send things and so can UPS. Compare prices between the 2. Local thrift stores may be willing to give a discount on clothes and the church or club or even your school may be willing to let you put in a box for clothes donations. Check with the place you are sending the packages too and ask what the cost to them would be to buy these things there. You may find it costs less to buy them there than it would be just for the postage to send them, If that is the case it may be better just to send the money to them.

There are people who are professional charity organisers. Find these people and ask for points or if you can be considered to be sponsored by any organisation. Often churches, business, and private parties will sponsor your work if you can show commitment and an outline of accomplishments.

I think that what you should do is visit your local post office with the weight of the goods you wish to send and ask them what the cheapest way to send it would be. I think that a good idea would be asking friends and relatives to give you any old clothes, shoes and toys they have that are still in working order so you can send them to the orphanage. This is a more environmentally friendly way of getting goods that buying new ones. Also, it's free! I really urge you to do this instead of buying new clothes and toys as its really a waste of money when so many people have old stuff they'd be happy to donate. I think you should be careful when sending school supplies, as items such as scissors, metal rulers, compasses and sharpeners would be confiscated at the post as they are seen as weapons. So just send blunt-ended pencils and rubbers. I would seriously stop there because you dont really want your stuff confiscated you know? For the blunt ended pencils, put a check of money in there (not cash as they use different currency) for them to buy a sharpener with. I really hope this helps and good on you for taking an interest in charity! Its a great idea and its good to see young people interested in helping the less fortunate. I'm a teenager too and I hate how older people stereotype us all into being gang members who go around stealing and stabbing and stuff, when really so many of us just want to help! :) people like you restore my faith in our generation :)

What would be so much cheaper, and more beneficial to local people, is to purchase what's needed in Kenya itself. That way, the costs of shipping are much lower, *and*, you help local business people - people who sell the things you are sending from the USA. I suggest you use the Internet to find volunteers (including PeaceCorps members), NGOs, and international NGOs that are working within a two-hour drive of this orphanage. If this orphanage is at all credible, it will have partnerships with credible international NGOs, and will be happy to give you the names of such. One of these organizations might be willing to be your intermediary - using the financial donations of you and others to purchase and donate what this orphanage needs, buying from local people themselves - thereby helping the local economy and not taking jobs away from these people by bringing in donations from elsewhere. If this orphanage has no partnerships with international NGOs, even informally, it may not be a reputable organization. There are many orphanages that are set up only to bring in foreigners such as yourself, who come in, have a look, and then start sending items to the organization to "help" -when, in fact, it's not really an orphanage, and the kids all have families.
