Difference between Neuroscience and Neurobiology?

Difference between neuroscience, neurobiology and cognitive science?

  • is there a difference? if so, what differentiates them? i'm about to finish up high school, and i'm looking at these as potential majors. Thanks

  • Answer:

Traditionally, cognitive science is not really a science. It is rather burdened with philosophical and theoretical approaches with little regard for scientific findings in neuroscience. This is not really surprising since very few of these findings can be easily incorporated into prevailing theories in cognitive science. Neurobiology is rather interested in inner workings of neurons in general without much concerns re cognitive processes these workings support. Neuroscience tries to map brain activity with subjective experiences of a subject, problem solving, deliberate or reflective actions etc. And although there are plenty of very insightful findings, a lack of a comprehensive cognitive theory leaves all these insights fragmented. However, all of these three disciplines inevitably overlap and uniting them into one is long overdue. My personal preference would be practical findings in neuroscience (and psychology) as starting point. But that is up to you to decide. Whatever you chose, I wish you luck.
