What are the restrictions on time travel?

• Ok, so there has been a lot of buzz about the question, "Could a single MEU take out the Roman Empire?" Some how the Marines traveled back in time and arrived in 23BC, in the prime of the Roman Empire. They need to take out the Roman Legions. The Marines traveled back in time with aircraft. That would no doubt utterly destroy the Romans. I proposed the question, wouldn't time travel mess up the aircraft's instruments and such? Rendering it almost useless. They also have armored vehicles, would those also be altered by time travel? What are you thoughts???

  Basic answer "NO!" Assuming that they could travel back in time (an impossibility, but we can 'dream'), the first thing to remember is just how much maintenance modern weapons require. Aircraft are especially vulnerable - they need lots of fuel, and it takes a great deal of technology to produce that fuel. Then there's the lubricants and so on - without them, the aircraft would become effective junk in a matter of a few hours. Similarly with armoured vehicles - they take a LOT of maintenance and a lot of fuel to be effective. Next, the firepower would barely last out a few confrontations. So, while the weapons would make a huge difference for the first confrontation, there would be no replacements, and the marines would soon be back to spears and swords. While I have no doubt that a marine with k-bar and so on is deadly, probably at least equal to a maniple of Romans, there is a limit to what one can accomplish. So, yes, they'd have an effect, but it would be very local, and they would probably not spread very far.
