What are the chances of voluntary simplicity becoming dominant?

What are the chances of me becoming an alcoholic?

  • I know that genes play 50% chance in becoming an alcoholic. I am curious exactly how much of a chance I have of becoming an allcoholic from a genetic Perspective only. Both of my grandfathers were alcholics (dads and moms side), I don't know anyone else in my family who are alcoholics (I have no clue about my dad, he doesn't exist in my life. So with only my grandfathers being alcoholics does that mean I have 25% of genetic predisposition? Please let me know in number only. I will not take responses such as "it depends" or "environment has an influence too" I know all of this. How much percentage chance do I have of becoming alcoholics. Based on genes alone? Serious answers only please

  • Answer:

Check the statistics on alcoholics... Each year, approximately 5,000 people under the age of 21 die as a result of underage drinking... This includes about 1,900 deaths from car accidents, 1,600 homicides, 300 suicides, and hundreds of other deaths due to accidents like falls, burns and drownings... Alcohol travels through your bloodstream and damages your brain, stomach, liver, kidneys and muscles... As a teenager, your body is still developing, so damage done to it now will affect the rest of your life... Over time, drinking destroys your body and your looks, so all that work you've done to look good, keep strong and stay fit goes down the drain fast... There are more than 12 million alcoholics in the U.S... In the United States, a person is killed in an alcohol-related car accident every 30 minutes... A recent study found nearly 7 million persons age 12 to 20 were binge drinkers... Adolescents who begin drinking before the age of 15 are four times more likely to become alcoholics than their counterparts who do not begin drinking until the age of 21...

Don't believe those exact figures (50%,25% ETC). Research regarding the area of genetics and alcoholism suggested that most, if not all alcoholism, comes from a predisposition towards engaging in binge drinking due to the liberal attitude others in the family, or friends, have towards drinking alcohol, and lots of it. But if you still fear becoming an alcoholic that much, the answer is simple: Don't drink, or drink only during special occasions.

I believe you are placing too much emphasis on a material explanation... it has a lot to do with the mind and your decisions about drinking. The mind is superior; the body is subservient to the mind and will. Use your will !!!

Please don't assume that you must ruin your life because of the mistakes of your family. My grandfather is an alcoholic, my uncle is an alcoholic, and my father died from liver cirrhosis. It's simply the way they deal with pain. When you get older, if you aren't yet 21, they will see you hurt from a guy, or work, or whatever and will offer a drink. This is how it starts. Don't let this be your escape. My other uncle is completely sober and doesn't smoke or drink. I occasionally have a beer or glass of wine, but not to the point of being unable to drive. There are other better ways of handling your problems. You will find out real quickly that alcohol can ruin your work and your family and everything you love.
