Is dust bad for electronics?

Why does electronics attract dust?

  • What is the reason behind electronics attracting dust?

  • Answer:

A lot of electronics have fan cooling. This moves more air, containing more dust, past the electronics, so unless there is an air filter, you'll get more dust. Air filters aren't usually used on consumer electronics because unless they are replaced regularly they clog and cause overheating. The motion of the fan blades through the air also sets up electrostatic charges - like rubbing a balloon on your shirt. The charged dust tends to cling to surfaces. Electric fields in the electronic themselves also attract dust, but this effect is minor compared to the electrostatics.
