What is the freezing point of blood?

The freezing point of blood?

  • I've heard it's around 32 degrees Fahrenheit, but then, if you went out side on a really cold day, wouldnt your blood freeze? Or is the fat and movement keeping it from freezing fast? Does anyone know how long it would take to freeze? I was just wondering about this by the way, i'm not planning to go freeze my blood or anything :p

  • Answer:

Blood is not just one liquid, so it doesn't have a single freezing point. It is a mixture of water, plasma, blood cells (which are more like solid bits floating in a liquid than a liquid, per se), and any number of other bodily fluids. Your body spends a lot of effort to keep you blood warm. Lethal levels of hypothermia start when your core body temperature drops just a few degrees. But that doesn't come up unless you spend a great deal of time outside in extreme cold, because your body is very well designed to prevent just that. Blood outside the body will freeze at around 32 F, or at least the water in it will. But, the water ice will encase the other elements of the blood, and there is a lot more water than anythign else, so it is effectively the entire mixture freezing for all intents and purposes.

your blood moving and your body staying at 98.6 degrees (or trying to) keeps your blood warm and going through out your body.

Chris S

well your blood doesnt freeze because it wont stop moving. if youre dead, then yep... it'll freeze between 27- 28 degrees fahrenheit. itll kind of look like.. im not gonna even go there... ewwwwww... i hate looking at dead people

your blood doesnt just freez when you go outside because your body temperature is 98.6 so it kinda stays warm all the time and your body fat helps it stay warm so you better hope ur at least chunky!!!!
