What happens when lightning strikes in the ocean?

If an electric eel was swimming near the surface of the ocean when lightning struck, what would happen to it?

  • When lightning strikes the ocean, it can be lethal to fish swimming within 10 to 20 feet from the surface of the water -- or so I read. What happens if an electric eel is swimming in this "danger zone?" How would it be affected?

  • Answer:

It would die. The ability to generate several hundreds of volts says nothing about it's ability to absorb millions of volts. When a battery is hit by lightning, it explodes. .
