Does anyone have a good science fair project idea?

I really need a good Science Fair idea (preferably music)?

  • does anyone have a good idea that i can use for my science fair project this year? I'm in 9th grade and I'm seriously stumped. anyone got anything?

  • Answer:

To do a good project you need some basic things: 1) do an experiment, not a demonstration - Your project should be titled "The effect of *Some kind of music* on on *Some behavior of an person or animal* (Please DO NOT study the effect of music on plants - this is a joke among science fair judges.) A demonstration is something with a title like "Making music using *Something*". Demonstrations are common at science fairs, but are usually not graded highly. 2) Your experiment should have a control condition. This is a case where no music is involved, so that a measure of the difference between having the music and not having it can be seen. 3) Research. Don't just make up an experiment and try it. Go to the library and look up music therapy and music psychology. Look these up in wikipedia to find references to books that will help. When you look at things that people have done on these subjects you will find deciding what kind of experiment to do will be quite easy. Last advice - pick something that looks easy, but not too easy, and then do it really well. It is better to do a simple project well than to have problems doing a big project.

You can make an instrument using a string, pulleys, and weights. Study the different pitches made when the weight increases and decreases. Or, you could study blood pressure changes or pulse changes when people are listening to different types of music.

Do it on resonance. that is a physical principle of sound vibrations. You can do this by plucking a bass guitar and figuring out what fret, or frequency, will vibrate a stack of plates, or anything that will vibrate. You don't have to use a bass guitar, but you need an instrument that will produce constant sounds and those sounds need to be deep enough to vibrate an object. An object will vibrate when then natural frequency of that object is equalled by the frequency of the sound wave. That is what resonance is and I did a Physics science fair project in high school on this subject.
