How do music and science relate?

Is this a good science fair idea? Tempo of music in restaurants :)?

  • The science fair idea I have is investigating 'The effect of the tempo of music played in restaurants on customer behaviour' My plan is to do this over 3 weekends, one with no music being played, one with fast music being played and one with slow music being played in the restaurant. What we'll be investigating is: • Time Spent • Perceived time spent • Amount of food eaten • Amount of drinks consumed • Mean spend on starters, mains, desserts, drinks Our hypothesis is that slow, classical music would result in higher spending and the perceived time spent would be higher. I do understand that there are many variables to this but please could you tell me if you think this is a good idea? and also give me feedback on it and the variables etc :)

  • Answer:

I think this is a very good idea and one which seems to have been overlooked generally. I believe that different types of music will have a variety of effects. I personally prefer the popular music from the 50s, 60's, and 70's. I believe that music which is perceived as more pleasant will have a beneficial effect upon the organism and the mind... hence eating habits and food preference, etc..
