    Ethanol. with a coloring in it. Red or Blue usually. Hey all of you who are saying "mercury".....If you have a mercury thermometer in your home dispose of it quickly and safely! Even a small Mercury spill must be reported quickly as it can poison hundreds of people! It is considered as hazmat situation!! Contact with even tiny amounts of mercury can cause brain damage, birth defects and death. Mercury has no place in the home.

ethyl alcohol and not methyl alcohol is used . due to its low freezing pint (much lower than mercury)

But usually it is not really alcohol, it's some other colored higher-boiling organic liquid. If you want to know what the liquid is, look up boiling points of liquids, and choose one wich match the highest value that your thermomether can rule.

i don't know what kind of alcohol. i think it is used to used as the thermometric liquid. But i think it is ethyl alcohol.
