I hate my new pharmacy technician job! How can I cope with it since I cant afford to quit.?
-
I really hate it...its high stress and awful...today during my lunch break I sat in my car and cried that's how overwhelmed I get with the job...Its my third day...yes day 4 and I'm ready to run for the hills (yes even if I did go to tech school) My stomach sinks in the Morning thinking I have to be there for 8 Hrs...its a retail pharmacy in a hospital but the staff never technically trained me they just threw me in there. I feel like my mind is going at 100 MPH per hour when the phone in the pharmacy rings, customers in line another call on hold...and yet I have no idea what is going on...I'm always "lost". How can I handle this I'm so miserable I can't even concentrate on anything when I'm off work because I'm thinking about pharmacy. I also can't afford to quit...how can I cope. This pharmacy has had the same tech for the past 7 years so I don't think they have ever had to formally train a new technician. The technician that has been there for 7 years is always so stressed and aggravated that she stresses me out as well. I have also heard her throw me under the bus for stuff that I asked her for help with. I can't afford to quit even though I get knots in my stomach every time I walk through the door. And by cope I don't mean taking any pills.

Answer:
It takes at least 6 months for a new tech to be minimally competent, and a good year for one to be fully knowledgeable. Learning by fire is the traditional way in pharmacies. You will learn what to do. The job can be frustrating in the beginning. There is a lot to learn. At my pharmacy, we do have training modules to help you learn the computer program. In general, tech school prepares you for nothing.

I think I may have already answered this question for you... The first option you have is to find a new job and then quit this job. The second option would be to do the adult thing and talk to the pharmacist or your manager about how things are going. Let them know you feel lost and you need more guidance... this is your first pharmacy job, they should understand that.

Wow, I really feel you. There is no quick fix for this. This book can help you get a more comfortable job: http://www.amazon.com/COURSE-MATERIALIZATION-Henry-Thomas-Hamblin/dp/0979726700 A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle can help you take the job a bit easier. Also, maybe look for a job at a different pharmacy.

Ok first and foremost pharmacy technician jobs can be stressful and a high amount of multi tasking is involved. You will have to adjust over a period of time if you plan to remain in this pharmacy. On your down time try not to think about the job to often and if at all possible start looking for another tech job. This particular job is in high demand and you should be able to find another job in this field relatively easy. Just remember that the job you have now is giving you experience. Hang in there.

First, don't take the issues that you have so personally, you remind me of me, I sometimes feel as though the world will end if I am not perfect at what I do. We are human, we don't have all answers to everything, do your best, that's all that you can do. Best is not perfect, remember that. Second, as hard as it is, don't take the job home with you, you need time to recover mentally and physically from a days work, thinking about it while away keeps you from doing this. Read a book, visit friends, get a hobby... thinking about it won't fix anything. Third, allow yourself a learning curve, even if those over you won't, I have been a machinist for over 30 years, I find that while principles are the same every place I work, all tool shops have their own ideas of how to run a job, it takes time to get with the program.
