How Should I study for the MCAT?

How to study for the MCAT?

  • Can you tell me how you studied for the MCAT or anything you would've done differently to score higher? How should I organize my time? (What materials did you use? How long did it take you to cover the material all the material once? etc.) I am planning on taking it next year and would like to start collecting materials and going over it. Currently, I am going over MCAT pearls found at http://www.mcatpearls.com/master/master.html. Is the information on this enough for the MCAT? Thanks for your help.

"Consistently." That's really the main piece of advice I can give you. I echo the PP about the Kaplan course--I used to teach for them too!--and really only consider it valuable if you are the kind of person who really needs a regimented structure to be sure you keep up on your studying. They are not going to teach you a darn thing that you can't find out for yourself by using any of the various review books. I also agree completely with taking the practice exams. Take the whole thing, too, not just one section at a time, because a lot of that test is just plain old stamina. You can get a number of tests through the AAMC website for a minimal cost, and those are actual retired MCAT exams. I used a Kaplan review book I got online and a bunch of websites. This was good (click on Science Reviews): http://www.scientia.org/ And I loved this guy's site, especially for the mnemonics: http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Union/5092/ That's all I seem to have left in my Bookmarks. *g* Just study hard and on a regular basis; you'll do fine.

I took a Kaplan class as well but the best thing I ever did was to take a practice test once every two or three days. In my experience, learning how they ask questions, pinpointing what they are looking for, and how to weed out the wrong answers increased my score the most.

I studied using the Kaplan Testing materials and review books and I took literally hundreds of practice tests and I did extremely well on the MCAT.

I bought a couple books of Kaplan practice tests at Borders. Don't take the class, it isn't worth the money, trust me, I work for them. There is nothing Kaplan teaches in class that you couldn't get with their online or print materials. Take tons of practice tests, look for clusters of wrong answers (they are usually on a single subject matter) and study that. Then take another and repeat until the practice scores are around your goal.
