How does medical school work?
-
What is it like in medical school? What's the life like? Is it hard? I want to become a trauma surgeon as well as a cardiovascular surgeon, could I become both? How would you get to be able to do more than one job in the medical field?

Answer:
Generally the first two years are spent in classrooms all day long, then an equal amount studying. The next two years are spent working with patients, often doing scut work that no one else wants to do. Also extremely long hours. Then you have to do an internship and a residency for many years, five or more, with the specialties of choice. The pay at that point is crap and you can easily work 100 hours a week, 36 hours or more working in a row. It varies by program, but that's generally how it goes. To do more than one job, you can work as back up for other doctors, or work a few days at one clinic and a few days at others.

Depends on your definition of "hard". Everyone in our Freshman class had at least a 3.8 GPA in college, so everyone was pretty smart. Still, half of the Freshman class was flunked out in the first 2 years. So I guess that's hard. 8 hours of lecture a day, at least that much reading at night. 2-500 page reading assignments with a test on the material the next day was common. Scoring of tests: 95-100--A 90-95 --B 85-90--C Below 85 --D. We were allowed one D - out the second one. Exams either multiple choice ( "answer A if 1 and 3 are true, B if 2 and 4 are true, C if 2 and 3 are true, etc.) or essay. Usually 4 hour written exams-- e.g. FInal exam in Bacteriology was " discuss Malaria". We had 4 hours and were begging for more time. Every time we took a final, we had a new course the next day, even while exams were going on. The new course prof would invariably give a 200 page reading assignment, with a quiz the next day- kind of interfered with studying for the other finals. After each series of big exams, the Fraternities would have parties. Our favorite beverage was a beverage called " Smiling" - short for "Smiling, the boy fell dead" 1 gallon of grain alcohol, 1 quart of grapefruit juice, one tray of icecubes. Served in glass- it melted wax cups. Even Lloyd's of London would not insure my Fraternity. We got a tad wild , I guess. I recall sitting on the back of a convertible, throwing empty beer cans at the Police car that was following us. Anyway, Med School is stressful as hell. Some of the students washed themselves out- just could not take the pressure. Just take one day at a time. You get through it.
