How to become an EMT in New Jersey?

If im alread an EMT-b, what more schooling would i have to finish before i could become a doctor?

  • I'm looking for options for college. I'd like to become a doctor. I have talked to some EMT's who said that while being an EMT/paramedic they were still going to school to become a doctor. My question is, if im already an emt/paramedic, have i already completed some of the required classes to become doctor, or is there still 4 years of pre-med and 4 years of medical school.

  • Answer:

Being an EMT and becoming a doctor are completely unrelated in terms of the process. You'll need 4 years of undergrad with the following required classes: Biology I,II; Chemistry I,II; Organic Chemistry I,II; Calculus I,II; Physics I,II; two semesters of English in addition to whatever your major requires. At some point during undergraduate school, you will nee to take the MCAT and score at the very least a 25 to have a good shot at admission. You'll also need a GPA of about 3.4 at the absolute minimum. Then you have to apply and interview at a number of different places until hopefully you get accepted somewhere. Then you do 4 years of medical school, the first two of which are the basic sciences. Then you take the USMLE step 1 exam, and you'd better absolutely kill it. Then for 2 years you do rotations in different hospitals. Surgery, Internal Med, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and OB/GYN are required, you also get some electives. Then you apply and interview for various residencies and hope you match somewhere. Then for at the very least 3 years, you have to do a residency at some hospital. Then, once you complete your residency you can become a practicing doctor. There is also a USMLE step 2 CK, and step 2 CS and a USMLE step 3 exam. During rotations, there are also SHELF exams that you have to do well on. Good luck.

1] you still must complete a] 4 years of college [ including some very tough 'pre-med' science, which are NOT the ones they teach EMT ]; and 2] 4 years med school; and 3] a 3 to 7 year residency [ depends on your specialty ]; and 4] maybe 1 to 2 year fellowship [ depends on specialty ]
