How can I become a doctor in Korea?

I WANT TO BE A DOCTOR! HELP!!! DONT SKIP ME!?

  • ello folks. Since I was a child, I wanted to be a doctor. I really want to help people and see them walk out of the hospital all healthy. I did a lot of research in being a doctor and am scared. Our family is in the middle class. I am happy that I am fed, cleaned, and cared for. I am a good student. I do not want to talk about my entire school life but I am 14 and in high school. I get good grades and is involved in extra-curricular activieis and sports. My family and friends around me say I am a humanity person. They said I am better in SS, English, and Spanish than in Math and science. I agree because I do get better grades in the three subjects. However, I have a high interest in math and science. I guess in terms of academics, I am good. I have good work ethics and going to work really hard to get good grades and on standardized tests score. Like mentioned before, our family is middle class and I think it is really difficult for my parents to pay 8 years of schooling. I heard that medical school costs a lot of money. I also heard about internship and stuff after schooling. I am a Korean citizen living in US without a green card. Therefore, I cannot get a job. I really want to be a doctor. It's my dream job. Just any kind of doctor. I want to help, Should I pursue a different and an easier career? Or, should I pursue my dream as a doctor. My parents say I should not worry about money and they think i should just study. Yes, I am young to think about these things but I have an older sibling that got accepted to colleges but a choice is needed to make because one is cheaper but worse while the other is expensive and a better school. I am just really worried. Should I just focus on grades and purse my career in medicine in South Korea? Gurh... Help me Yahoo! P.S. Why does money control us in preventing to become a better person?

  • Answer:

First, money does not prevent individuals from bettering themselves. That said, if you work hard in high school, attend a good college (note, good does not mean "most expensive -- there are many good colleges and universities that are not unreasonably priced), work hard there, attend medical school, and work hard there, you can still become a doctor. Scholarships (that you do not have to repay) are available to those with financial need, academic or athletic skills. Student loans are also available. They typically have lower interest rates than most loans and can be repaid in the 20-30 years after completing your education. However, the one thing that gives me pause about what you wrote is that you are a "Korean citizen living in the US without a green card." Are you here illegally? If so, that may prevent you from being able to access scholarships or loans. You may need to return to South Korea, complete your education there, then come to the US legally.

If you are not a legal immigrant (ie no papers), no schooling in the world is ever going to matter -- you still won't be able to get a medical license or job. Just the way it is. Yes, med school costs about $1 MILLION dollars over the 12 years of schooling and internship, but people pay that back over time (student loans aren't due back until you get into the job market). What really matters is you're not eligible in the US for a license or job. That stops you at the front door. Don't know what to tell you there except Ask immigration what you need to do to get your green card? It still may be possible, just take a little extra time. I wouldn't know about that stuff. Good luck.
