What is the importance of feedback mechanism of insulin and the concentration of glucose in the blood?

  • This question is driving me insane!

  • Answer:

When you eat a meal -you are taking in carbohydrates from numerous sources (NOT only sugary foods, but CARBS come in many disguises:as in mashed potatoes, peas, carrots, fruit juices, sodas, breads, milk, pasta, rice ... the list is never ending! I've found a TERRIFIC reference page for calculating the amount of carbs(sugars) in foods I'm not very familiar with. THIS little page is VERY handy!!! http://www.caloriecountercharts.com/chart1a.htm What happens in the body of a "normal person" when they eat a meal is - the panreas is notified by chemical signals that the sugar in the blood is rising swiftly and it counteracts this by opening the gates to effectively release your body's own natural sugar-user-INSULIN. What happens in the body of a diabetic(like myself) for example when I eat a meal is nothing like the above. The foods I eat DO turn into easily used sugars for my body's energy needs,BUT my pancreas is NOT able to put out enough insulin to keep things regulated. In MY body, the levels of sugar not only rise MUCH HIGHER than they should, but they also take MUCH LONGER to return to normal level. The term "FEEDBACK" describes the chemical pathway your body automatically has(built in) to regulate the number of sugar molecules floating around in your blood by the almost instantaneous release of insulin, which is effective in letting your body make quick use of sugar for the body's energy needs. Many people have used the internet to educate their own selves about diabetes, making it much less of a MYSTERY. Joslin Diabetes Clinic here in JAX, FL has a great site for learning all you want to know about glucose & insulin at:: http://www.joslin.org/LearnAboutDiabetes_Index_home.asp
