What is the portfolio's beta?

I have a Geiger counter. I want to check food for radiation. should i check for beta or gamma radiation?

  • Hi, I live in Japan. Because of radiation concern. I bought a Geiger counter. "TERRA MKS-05". It can check for beta and gamma radiation. My question is. If i am in a supermarket or at home. Should i check a food for beta or gamma radiation? Also in which cases i should use checking of beta and gamma radiation test? Also if i am buying some building materials. Should i check it for beta or gamma radiation? To check for a gamma seems more easy. Just put Geiger counter close to whatever i want to check check, and it will show. But for beta little complicated. As far as i understand. First i need to check for a gamma radiation with a closed cover lead to a sensor. then i need to check for a beta radiation with open cover lead to a sensor. Then if there any difference between gamma test with closed lead to a sensor and beta test with open lead to a sensor. Then i think this material has some radiation. Should i check the building materials or ground around for a beta or gamma radiation? Beforehand thanks for any answer that might help me to understand.

  • Answer:

Check for both. Remember not to panic when you pick up background radiation, its everywhere. Gamma is probably the most prominent in your area but alpha and beta are also present. Alpha and beta are the ones most damaging when ingested. Since you have the capability and considering your situation it makes sense to check for both.
