What all do I need to become a doctor?

  • I want to know ALL the things that I will need to become a doctor. Other than volunteering and taking the MCAT, what else will I need to do? How many hours of volunteer work would be ideal?

    Volunteer (100+ hours if you can) in a clinical setting, get some shadowing experience (you don't need as many hours as volunteering, but I'd shadow extensively different doctors. Sometimes you get better experiences shadowing a doctor than volunteering!) , and have some extracurricular activities that set you apart (join and be active in clubs, play a sport, instrument, tutor, etc.) Besides that you really have to work hard to keep good grades up in the pre-reqs (gen chem, ochem, bio, physics, math). You don't HAVE to get your degree in a science field. If you loved English Literature, you could theoretically major in English Literature or something like that, but you'd still have to complete all the med school requirements along with the requirements for your degree, so it is easier to major in a science. Also, people who major in a science tend to do better on the MCAT (which makes sense since you'll be taking upper-level science classes that reinforce concepts on the MCAT as opposed to reading Shakespeare or something).

try to get as much volunteer time as you can! Also get A's it helps alot! Then in senior year of high school apply to a 4 year college and register as a pre-med student and try to get the best grades you can get and as much community service as you can and in your senior year of pre-med school which is your fourth year apply to med school which i believe is four years also but depends on what you want to do. After this point i do not know but i know all this because i wanted to be a doctor for awhile and i spent many hours finding this information out!

The path of becoming a doctor is a long and difficult road. To generalize the basic procedure, one has to accomplish the following task to become a physician; 1. Major in any science field, any science fields will be acceptable and most likely recommended. during the undergraduate period; try to get involve in the medical field, such as volunteer or get an intern in clinic, hospital, etc 2. Take the MCAT test with the best possible score 3. take three to four years of medical school with endless study hours. 4. pass the medical test 5. being a resident in the hospital 6. pass the big medical test again 7. after accomplish all the following, you are officially a medical doctor that earn around fifteen to twenty thousand per month.

Volunteering will help.Try and getting as many volunteer hours,it makes you look good and shows you responsible.First years of college take all the science you can get(biology,anatomy,chemistry,just any science).Good source of scholarships because medical school is expensive.If you have no financial way of getting into medical school ask hospitals around you if they have a program were they pay for your schooling and later you work for them as long as they require.

Follow your local hospital's requirements. I'm DOING THE SAME. This is awesome - okay - 40 hrs of physician shadowing. Ask hospital about this. 1 year biology, 1 year general chemistry, 1 year organic chemistry, 1 year physics, 1 year calculus. Microbiology, anatomy, comparative anatomy recommended. Good grades, recommended As. You can negotiate anything else, but As help. Get a bachelors degree in chem engineering or biology, chemistry. Science of the sorts. You'll need the interest. The genuine desire to help people. If you don't, they'll rip it out of yah. Start watching those shows like discovery health. Have a good knowledge of medicine BEFORE even entering med school.
