What subjects/ qualifications do I need to get to become a paediatrician?
-
I'm choosing my GCSE options now. I would like to know from GCSE what subjects and grades I need to get to become a pediatrician. Are there any subjects that would help me? If I HAD to choose a Foreign Language, it would be German. Does that help at all? Do I need any Humanities subjects? If I do, how will that help me? I only have 4 options, 2 will be used up when I take Triple Science, so are there any subjects that would help me? Please I would really like it if someone gave me the answer to it by stating ALL the GCSE, A-Level, University qualifications/ subjects etc. that I need! Thank You!

Answer:
It doesn't matter what subjects you take for GCSE, Universities don't really care much about GCSE (just make sure you get at least 7 A*-C's and you will be fine). A levels are important. Ignore the people that say you need 11A*'s, they haven't got a clue. At A level you need at least AAB in at least 2 sciences. I recommend a potential Medical applicant to do Maths. Biology and Chemistry ( and another AS level which you enjoy). It's abit early now to be thinking about A levels and work experience, you still have a good 2-3 years until you need to worry about these.

A levels are a must at A or B grades, in the following subjects: Maths, and Science subjects such as Chemistry, Biology. Depends really on what University you want to enter. Some require Human Biology, Physics. It would go without saying you need a good standard of written English too.

You need to train to be a doctor first, then you specialise. Spanish is the 3rd most language. It would help if you contact a medical training hospital.

You need to go to medical school to become a doctor first - a paediatrician is a speciality that you train for after you become a medical doctor. So, your qualifications need to enable you to get into medical school. Excellent GCSEs are a must, the subjects that are core are English, Maths, Chemistry, Biology, Physics (or the combined sciences that cover all of these). At A level, Chemistry is essential and Maths or Physics, then another subject, usually biology but others can be acceptable as it shows that you are versatile, though each medical school has their own criteria (google search the university, prospectus and admissions criteria and they will list their minimum GCSE and A level requirements). So, stating all the GCSEs will not be very helpful, as so many different combinations may be acceptable, as long as the core ones are there. Once you are in medical school, you'll be guided through to qualify as a doctor then training and speciality training to become a fully fledged paediatrician. It's also very important to start thinking about volunteer work or work experience in a caring setting. Being a leader for school activities, volunteering for a charity or old folks' home, babysitting etc all shows that you are a reliable and keen candidate. All too near applications deadline, these turn up whereas if you've been doing it long before this, it shows that you've really thought well ahead and are serious about it - which you have already shown that you are! Good luck!
