What is a profession in the medical field of which i would not have to work with blood, guts, and etc?
-
I want to go to medical school because my high school grades suck and i see it as my only option. I will probably go to a state school and get good grades there and get into medical school. The thing is.... I'm really really scared of blood. What can i do? What jobs are there for me so that i can be in the medical field, with a considerably high income, and not have to work with blood, or perhaps even patients? I'm thinking biochemist, but im taking biotech right now and i hate the class. Also, is medical school required to become a biochemist? Please suggest other jobs in the medical field that does have to work directly with human flesh, blood, guts, etc? Thanks so much!

Answer:
You want to go to medical school, because it is your only option with bad grades? Huh? Bad grades are not something medical schools accept, and if your are having trouble in high school, medical school will be way beyond your grasp. By your requirements of no blood, no guts, and not patients you have eliminated medical school completely. No matter what, during school and during your residency you will be exposed to all those in great abundance. You could do a medical related field like pharmacology, biochemistry, medical physics, physiology etc which do not require medical school.

I don't understand why you think medical school is your only option due to the fact that you aren't getting good grades in high school? I am not trying to be rude, I just don't understand; if you don't do well in school then medical school realistically probably isn't even an option at all, as it is extremely competitive, probably the most competitive post-graduate training (in general) that there is. If you go to medical school, you will (with 100% certainty) be exposed to blood, "guts", etc. In medical school you rotate through the major medical specialties, which includes surgery. Everyone in medical school does it. A biochemist does not need to go to medical school. Other jobs in medicine that don't require exposure to blood or other bodily fluids (for the most part) would include physical therapist, radiology technologist, respiratory therapist (you do deal with a bit of body fluid here), and pharmacy technician.

If your HIgh School grades "suck", why in the world would you think of going into one of the most demanding fields around? You need to develop good study habits and get grades that will get you into a good university. That is not guaranteed nowadays, and if your grades are too bad, you may not even make it into college. High School grades do not count for much to Medical Schools, but you have to be admitted to the University first, and pass a tough pre-medical curriculum with pretty much straight A's. I suggest you re-evaluate things. Medical School is for becoming a physician, not a Biochemist. There is no way you can avoid blood and guts.. It comes to you , you have to handle it. Lab techs work with blood specimens. Respiratory therapists are in Intensive care all the time. Nurses help the doctors with the blood and guts part. Perhaps you could be a Psychologist. You could specialize in unrealistic fears.
