Radiologic Technologist?

Can I be a Paramedic/ Radiologic technologist?

  • AT first I wanted to be a Radiologic technologist and I completed all my prerequesites for the program. I then changed my mind and I'm currently in my school's paramedic program. Would I get paid more if I was both a paramedic and a radiologic technologist at the same time? I used to volunteer at a diagnostics clinic where they did X-rays and MRIs and they always had a paramedic on duty incase something went wrong. Would I be able to do both the paramedic's and radiologic technologist's job at the same time and get paid more?

  • Answer:

No. You can't hold both positions at the same time. You can work as a paramedic/EMT on shift 1, and a Rad. Tech on another shift -- but not at the same time. So it wouldn't be a bad idea to get both qualifications to open your options, but you won't get more pay from 'combining' the two. It would be a good selling point to get a Rad Tech job showing that you also have life saving capabilities which can only help your position and pay.

Other answers

No you can not work as both at the same time. You can NOT do radiology procedures as a Paramedic. It is very, very doubtful a company will write a scope of practice for both licenses since Radiology has its own medical director. If you get caught overlapping both, you will lose both licenses. Keep the two jobs separate. Don't try to sell the Paramedic stuff too heavy when applying as a Radiology Technologist. They want someone who is dedicated to that profession and not distracted by ambulances coming in. You could seriously injure or kill someone if that happens.
