Why am I allergic to Penicillin?

Why am I allergic to Amoxicillin and not Penicillin ?

  • Amoxicillin gives me a rash and an upset tummy even though I eat stuff with it.

  • Answer:

The truth is you are probably NOT having an "allergic reaction" to them at all. You are simply having a reaction. There is a difference. The rash from Amoxicillin and Penicillin is simply an overload of histamines in your skin that can last for a while after you stop taking these drugs. Other side effects could include swelling of the hands, feet, lips, etc. You can treat these symptoms with an antihistamine.

probably because they're two different things and they're made of different substances. Just a thought.

Stomach upset is not an allergic reaction, though a rash certainly is. You may allergic to a dye or other inactive ingredient in the amoxicillin.
