What are the steps for becoming a CRNA?

  • I am in my first year of college getting my BSN. I understand all the steps and processes for becoming a CRNA. I am just curious though, in CRNA school, does it require a lot of math? Like what kind of math? And does a CRNA purley just memorize mostly medicines? I know they administer anesthesia, but what is their course study in CRNA school? And do you know the percentage of people that finish CRNA school and get their license? Thank you!

    The math is straightforward. "Just memorize"? Not really. There are tons of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, neurology, pharmacology, pharmacodynamics that are taught. Yes you memorize, but you have to understand what you memorize. Then there's how to administer & monitor anesthesia. In my wife's class close to 100% graduated. Admission to any masters or doctorate (MD/DO) level program in medicine / nursing is VERY competitive. Very. Good luck!

The math is simple. Mostly basic mathematical operations, like converting mcg to mg and figuring out dilutions. No, they do an awful lot more than memorize medications. At least I hope so. I'm not sure what they are taught in nurse anesthesia school, but I hope it involves a lot of physiology and pharmacology. Some CRNAs seem to have a very good handle on those things, others, not so much. I don't know how many finish, but there are some who come through that just don't "get it". Many who are borderline dangerous still manage to pass and get licensed. I've seen a few who didn't make it though.
