Why does hydrogen peroxide bubble?

What in our bodies makes Hydrogen Peroxide bubble?

  • Extremley puzzeling to me, I've put it on unpoped and poped pimples, pores, hair folicles and stuff around the house too.

  • Answer:

When the peroxide comes into contact with catalase(an enzyme in cells), it turns the peroxide into water (H2O) and oxygen gas (O2)

Hydrogen Peroxide naturally breaks down into Water and oxygen gas (+ some heat). Normally, it breaks down very slowly which is why we don't notice anything strange. A catalyst is something that speeds up a chemical reaction, thus catalysts would speed up this breakdown. In our blood cells, we have something called catalase (an enzyme) which acts as a catalyst. It is one of the most efficient catalysts known. In fact, one molecule can convert 5 million H2O2 molecules to H2O + O in 1 minute! One of the reasons this interesting enzyme exists is to get rid of H2O2! Many biological processes produce hydrogen peroxide, since it is toxic to cells, it must be quickly converted to prevent damage. This is one of the reasons organisms have catalase!

I'm not a chemist, but hydrogen peroxide I think is H2O2? And I imagine that would probably react with H2O.
