Why do so many drugs come from plants?

Cannabis, cocaine comes from the coca plant, opium from poppy, coffee from coffee plant/beans. Could you make a drug out of any plant? What is it about the plants that give off the common effects of drugs, like the high? How many drugs do you think there are in the world? :o How are medicinal drugs constructed, such as antidepressants?

There are so many out there, I mean there's opiates, cocaine, caffeine, nicotine, ecstasy, LSD, mushrooms, salvia, and even a type of cacti can get you high. You cant get a refined drug out of any ordinary tree though. Which is a good thing. They produce prescription drugs out of a wide variety of things, ranging from lithium, to opium. Too many things to name though.
Most if not all pharmisuticals are plants. The plant effects resepters in the brain make you feel happy, sad, etc..
