What A-levels do i need to become a doctor?

If you decide you want to be a doctor you will have to start out at a medical school. Each of these schools is part of a university, but will also have close links with hospitals and GP practices for medical learning, clinical teaching and scientific research. Some medical schools offer accelerated graduate-entry courses. With this type of course, medical schools can give credit to part of a student’s prior learning. Some universities provide fast-track, graduate-entry medical degree courses, lasting four years. Some require applicants to hold a science-based degree, while others consider graduates in any subject. Good A level grades or the equivalent are needed for most student places. However, medical schools will consider people with other attributes and skills that support their application. Evidence of scientific ability and the capacity for study are important. Some colleges run an ‘access to medicine’ course, which aims to bring students up to speed on relevant scientific knowledge before they begin a medical course. After university, you will have what is normally referred to as a ‘first MB degree’. The UK Clinical Aptitude Test The UK Clinical Aptitude Test (UKCAT) is used in the selection process by a consortium of UK university medical and dental schools. The test has been designed to help universities to make more informed choices from among the many highly qualified applicants who apply for medical degree programmes. It ensures that the candidates selected have the most appropriate mental abilities, attitudes and professional behaviours required for new doctors and dentists to be successful in their clinical careers. The test does not contain any curriculum or science content; nor can it be revised for. It focuses on exploring the cognitive powers of candidates and other attributes considered to be valuable for healthcare professionals.

I am applying this year, make sure you do Chemistry A Level as well as Biology. The rest is up to you but make sure they are tough A levels, Not Art, fashion or something like that. Math's or Physics goes well for Oxbridge - infact I think they demand it. Having said that a lot of universities like to see breadth, maybe English Language (?). Make sure you have the key two and your other two I would go with one science (maths or physics) plus a subject that shows you are good with language, essays, constructing arguments etc - English Language?

Biology would seem to be an obvious one but, suprisingly for some, more store is laid by chemistry these days. Physics is also useful.

At least: > Biology > Chemistry > Physics OR Mathematics Most universities want AAA for the A levels. B4 starting uni you'll attend an interview where they'll ask you questions and mark you on them. They may ask you awkward real life situation questions e.g. if u had one bottle of medicine and had two patients, an old man and young child, who would u give the medicine to and why? I admit its hard but good luck!

Ideally you need all A's but some med schools will accept 1-2 B grades if you have a particularly good profile of for example work experience etc. You definitely need Chemistry plus physics maths or biology. Basically the "core" sciences. There are other route depending on age and experience - there is an Access to Medicine course at the college of West Anglia for those 21 years of age upwards, or if you already have a degree you can get into a "fast-track" course such as that at Nottingham Uni or Cambridge if you are really brainy! First of all be certain you want to follow this career. Biology Chemistry and Physics would be appropriate subjects but to be sure contact the University you have in mind and ask them along with your schools career advisor.

Grade 'A's in Biology, Chemistry and Physics plus an 'A' in Psychooogy if you cannot do the physics. If you do a gcse in latin that will be agreat help as well.
