What is it like to be a medicine intern?

What are an Internal Medice intern's responsibilities?

  • Do you rotate through all the departments in your intern year, or only see patients in the internal medicine department. I'm sorry if it's a basic question; I'm studying outside the US that's why I'm outside the loop on American hospital protocols.

  • Answer:

You rotate through internal medicine and its subspecialties (nephrology, cardiology, GI, pulmonology etc.). You may spend time in the ICU and emergency department although where I work this is done in the 2nd year. Outpatient clinic is interspersed with inpatient work.

Other answers

It isn't my specialty, but I'm pretty sure there's a mix of rotations with a couple of "clinic days" to get you into the swing of things with longitudinal care.
