How to stop taking xanax?

Xanax and effects if you stop taking it...?

  • Ive been on Xanax for 2 months now. I only take half of the blue pill at night to help me sleep. I wanted to know if anyone has every just tried to ween themselves off of it so soon. Like take maybe half of a half and then try not taking them at all. I dont want to take these forever, but I dont want to have the side effects as was stated in some answers in the past (seizures and withdrawl)Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated! TY

As Xanax is available as a generic and thus multiple companies produce it, the color does not clearly indicate the dosage stregnth to me. However, it is addictive, but usually at higher doses. Doctors, pharmacists and psychologists would likely tell you that those addicted are taking about 6mg - 8mg daily. Xanax is a short-acting medication indicated to treat anxiety. Oddly enough, because it is short-acting it is more addictive. There is an extended release available that claims to be less addictive. Keep in mind that some of the horror stories you may have heard may just be that. The stories do not often address other medications patients were taking and therefore it is hard to completely pin it on Xanax. While it is a mild sedative there may be better medications for sleep, especially if you are afraid of becoming dependant. Rozerom is relatively new, but does not work like the hypnotics on the market and probably runs a lower risk of dependance. Talk to your doctor, obviously, and express these concerns.

I would most absolutely ask your prescribing doc for advice on discontinuing the xanax asap. It is a very dangerously addictive benzo for some people. I had become addicted to them and had to be detoxed off... I was at a much higher doseage than yours for a much longer period of time so don't worry please, I did not experience any seizures but did have withdrawal which was unpleasant to say the least. But do remember I was on a much higher dose for a lot longer period of time than you so don't use my experience as the standard. Just tell your doc you want to get off the xanax completely and safely then follow his/her instructions to the letter. Do not try to do it yourself.

Call the doctor who prescribed it and ask him/her. Only they know for sure. and if something happens it will be the doctors fault. Not yours. I had a friend who gradually weened her self off a medication before the doctor said it was ok. It wasn't an anti-anxiety med. But she had a reaction and went to the hospital, and got treated for her problem. The doctor thought she was trying to save up enough pills to kill her self. and had her admitted to the psychiatric unit of the hospital. It was a big mess. So I suggest you call your doctor and ask him/her.
