What percent of the brain do we use?

I heard on the internet that we only use 10% of our brain does anyone think that we can use all 100% percent?

  • My Brother said to me that it might be impossible because using 100% could cause brain damage somehow I can't remember exactly what he said.

  • Answer:

"I heard on the Internet" should tell you something about the reliability of the statement in question. We need all of our brain. We don't use it all at once, just like we don't use all of our muscles at once (picture that for a moment). The brain is a very complex organ that works by both stimulation and inhibition of impulses. Different areas do different things, and the various parts of the brain work together to help you function as a human being. The evidence for needing all of your brain comes from what happens when a little bit of it dies (as in a stroke) or is otherwise injured. The results can range from annoying (can't remember certain words) to devastating (paralysis, memory loss, unable to swallow or speak, etc.) In children, parts of the brain can adapt and take over for injured parts, but that's a different topic. Hope that helps.

This is a common distortion people propose as proof that human beings can become incredibly intelligent given time. The whole truth is that we only use 10% (or similar small amounts) of our brain at one time. You're not always recalling a memory. You're not always thinking critically. You're not always concentrating on sensory information. You're not always dealing with emotions. So you're not always using all of your brain at once.

lots of the 'unused' portion is a redundant back up in case other parts of the brain suffer damage. However, I DO believe we waste our mental capacity and that is too bad. How many people engage in life time learning. How many explore new subjects and activities throughout their lives? The human mind is the most complex and powerful entity in the known universe and I believe ordinary people can do extrodinary things with their minds if they have the will to do so.

Fancy That

The 10% thing is a myth. You are a lot of your brain, but usually for non-conscious things like breathing, etc. Some of your brain is reserved for back up. However, you do use only a small percentage of your brain for conscious thought. If you use more than that, your brain may get conflicting images, and you'll probably be very unfocused.

Sounds like you've used 100%, he he only joking. If we used 100% we'd soon go into melt down thats why clever people go mad coz they can't cope and burn out.

just because a man in a white jacket says, its so, doesnt mean hes right... we DONT have redundant systems in our bodies... we use 10% of our brain for our motor functions, and life support systems.... i think we use the rest to store memories.. like RAM on a PC... we access the memories and create intuitive learning based on what we know, and what we see... using only empirical evidence.... its all got to go somewhere hasnt it? remember this.

yeah prob, my sis is a mental health nurse, and most of the carzies she works with use up to 60-80% of their brain! lots of them are in there cos they cant handle life with all of us, we're too normal and can function through this western world system and we think their broken, which is said : (

We can't use all 100%of our brains all time long, this could either cause brain damage or bad tiredness... But what we do, is use 'sides' of our brains depending on time, for example when you listen to music or think about love or deal with emotional desires and issues, that's using some specific side of your brain. There is no way on planet earth somebody could solve an algebra problem while thinking about how much he loves his girlfriend! Humans have specific times of using specific sides and parts of their brains... Of course, there is a memories side, and there are sides of learning and doing math and algebra and physics and all that, and side of emotional thinking... So to answer the question if we use all our side of our brains? Then YES! We do... Even if we're not good at math for example, we DO think about math, just by answering 4-1, you'll have a thought about math! So being bad at something has nothing to do with using your brain because you use your brain in anything you go through... Anyways, the answer is yes we use 100% of our brains, BUT and as I said, we can't use the whole 100% in ONE time! ;)

we cant use all of our brain all of the time. first the right and left hemishphere have different fynctions. Right is for more artful expression, while left is more logical reasoning. second, and I am not a scientist, various other parts of our brains, are used for emotion, emergancies, critical thinking, sub conscience, etc. Plus have you ever noticed that those that are extream geniuses, also have more mental illnesses, and tend toward nervous breakdowns, insomnia and other mental illnesses. Look at A beautiful mind (the book/ movie with russle crowe) and other examples. Van gough cut off his ear. Children prodigies are usually are the most unhappy of children. they use more brain capacity than most, even above average IQ people but they suffer more mental illness as well.
