I want to be an Anesthesiologist.

When does it actually matter what kind of doctor you want to be (pediatrician, anesthesiologist, surgeon, etc)?

  • i'm not sure what kind of doctor i want to be but a pediatrician and an anesthesiologist are on the top of the list. i wanna be the kind of doctor that makes good $$$ and sees nothing too graphic (so a surgeon is definitely a no-no i guess...) but when does it actually matter? do i need to know and decide before college, medical school, you're residential years, or after that?

  • Answer:

In the late fall and winter of your final year in medical school, you'll be interviewing for residency slots. It's a good idea to know what sort of residency you're looking for at that point. But even then, it's possible to decide on a medical or surgical specialty, choose the appropriate residency, and put off any decision about any subspecialty training. At any rate, you have plenty of time, and it'll pretty well hit you in the face when it's time.

you have to decide by the beginning of your 4th year of medical school because this is when you apply to residency. when you apply to residency you are applying to a specific specialty like internal medicine, surgery, etc

You don't want to see anything too graphic? You'd better stay the hell out of anesthesia, then. We have to watch the surgery to know what's going on, so we can anticipate what we have to do on our side. (It's bad form to be caught by surprise by sudden blood loss, or the case ending, or things like that). You cannot POSSIBLY know what you want to do until you are well into your clinical rotations in med school. Judging by the way you write, medical school may not be in your future. ("wanna"?! C'mon. Also, "you're" is a contraction for "you are" and is not the same word as "your". Details matter in medicine.) To answer your question, you decide when you apply for residency positions in your last year of medical school.

I think that when you are going through your clinical rotations it will become clear to you what kind of doctor you want to become. Our son, currently in medical school has said that he wants to be an ER doctor and was told that his character, personality and demeanour would be a good fit with that choice. I think you will have LOTS of time to decide what kind of doctor you want to be, but first you have to qualify to become one. That's the hard part.

If you're doing it for the money the hard work it takes to get through med school and residency really wont be worth it. So, do something else. Otherwise you wont have any idea what you want to do until your third year of medical school.

The majority of Med Students change their mind during the Clinical Rotations. Lots WERE going to be surgeons, not many ended up in that field. Now, as far as pay goes, since that is a major consideration for you, The surgical fields do the best, but the stress level is high, the hours bad, and it does get pretty graphic. Next choice would be Radiologist. I hope the money in not your motivation. Do a good job in whatever field you enter, and you will enjoy a comfortable standard of living, if not rich. Most of my wealthy MD friends made their money in the stock market.
