Is it good to get EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) certificate while applying to medical school? ?
-
I am a premed college student studying biology major, chemistry minor, and business minor. My friend just worked really hard during summer to get a EMT certificate. and I know that she isn't interested in EMT position, because she also aspire to become a medical doctor. Is getting a health tech certificate good in addition to volunteering, shadowing, leadership activity, and research?

Answer:
It depends. It is not a sure thing that it will get you in, and it will not make up for bad grades or a poor MCAT score. Med schools will easily see through if you are just doing this for the med application. That being said, being an EMT can be a great experience and can give you great relevant experience to medicine. Be sure to focus on the basics- pre med classes, MCAT, and solid extracurriculars like shadowing and research before getting involved in EMT, health tech certificates etc. Good luck.

Isn't going to hurt, but it probably isn't going to help much either. Spend your energy on getting excellent grades and acing the MCAT.

yes... whatever you have over another applicant to the med school of you choice is helpful... but in my opinion it is a very good experience to work as an emt though... you learn how to talk to patients and you'd have a much better understanding of what happens in the pre-hospital setting before the patients even see you...

Like anything else in life, the more broad your knowledge the better off you are to deal with uncertain things. I have been an EMT for years and have the highest respect for Docs who understand what it is like out in the field. It never hurts to get your feet wet either, you might find out something about yourself that you never knew!

Absolutely...it will give you an opportunity to participate in patient care in the prehospital environment. Volunteer Rescue Squads and Fire Departments are looking for certified EMT's to volunteer their time. If you become a member of one of these departments, it will also provide you with an opportunity for some 'free' education. If you are considering emergency medicine, it will also show you what you are made of..if it's worth investing all the time and money. If you can't tolerate blood, feces or vomit, you will have a hard time in emergency medicine.
