Blood Types and Transfusions.

What prevents your body from accepting transfusions of certain types of blood?

  • Answer:

Technically you wouldn't already have formed antibodies to other blood types. Antibodies are produced after antigen exposure. Blood types are examples of HLA(human leukocyte antigens) and they serve as cell membrane proteins that help cells to recognize one another as "self". When a "non-self" antigen is recognized it is attacked by a number of cytotoxic mechanisms and hemolysis of the foreign blood results.

I disagree with the RH answer. It isn't the Rh factor that doesn't allow one blood type to accept other blood types. Your immune system doesn't allow it....your own antibodies. Depending on your blood type you have certain antibodies against some other types...I won't go into it right now (if you need more info please let me know). this is what causes reactions.

That's called the Rh factor. It's what the blood bank checks for first when either accepting a donation or preparing it for issuance to a clinic or hospital for use.
