How hard is it to become a doctor?

  • I’m looking to become either a doctor of internal medicine, or a general practitioner and i know I’m looking at a lot of school and studying and such and I’m willing to put in the work for it but, what should I take for my first four years of school and how hard is it go get accepted into a med school(how important is your GPA/class rank)? also if looking to become a doctor what should you be good at?

  • Answer:

Most major in biology, chemistry, or other fields of that nature, but it is not required. You can major in anything you want (it's best to choose what you will enjoy the most and will do well in), as long as you fulfill the basic requirements for medical school, which are a minimum of 1 year of: General biology Physics with lab General chemistry (inorganic chemistry) with lab Organic chemistry with lab Calculus English A good GPA and a good MCAT score are very important in getting into medical school--it's very competitive. Shadowing a doctor and volunteering experience in a hospital are good ways to show that you are serious about becoming a doctor. More importantly, it'll tell you whether or not a career in medicine is truly right for you. If you want to become a doctor, you must be fully committed to it.

Obviously you have to do pre-med w/a GPA of probably 3.6 or above. You should be good at science.

My dad's a doctor and he always told me that he had to work really well in college in order to get into medical school. Once he was in medical school he completely goofed off because the medical schools won't kick you out because they are already spending so much money on you. He has this joke that he says all the time. "What do you call the person who graduates last in their class?" "Doctor" Lol. I never really got why it was funny but just try to do well in college and you can relax a bit in medical school. You have to go for a long time so make sure you really want to do it. Somebody answered above me that you have to be a Pre-Med student. This is false. Medical schools look for diversity. 95% of the people applying probably have Pre-Med majors. I'm not saying major in Law or something. Major in some sort of science.

This is a tough time for doctors because our health care system is completely broken. Besides determination, you are going to need a lot of patience and be willing to live dirt poor for the first few years as you will have massive debts and will make close to nothing.
