How do painkillers work?

If a bottle of painkillers says to take 2, how many would be deadly? b/c only 2 doesnt work for me?

  • Answer:

Depends majorly on what kind they are...and how many you can take within a 24hr period...id research the drug online and/or the drug sheet you get when you got it filled. But to help you better, i would need to know what kind they are!

If it doesnt do anything for your pain, tell your doctor and ask for a different type of painkiller. Drugs affect person differently. Vicodan does nothing for me, but regular motrin works just fine ?!

It depends on your weight. Usually, you have to take quite a few more than a recommended dose for it to be *deadly,* but if you're not a very big person just a few extra is potentially hazardous. I'd stick with what it says on the bottle. If you're a male of reasonable size (70 kg/175 lb) you can probably take an extra and be okay. Of course, this is talking about over the counter pain drugs, like Tylenol, Advil, etc. If you're on a prescription pain drug, never take more than the label. Aside from the other potential hazards, prescription painkillers can be highly habit-forming, and taking them in larger doses than prescribed can cause addiction.

hi i am a doctor, if the dose on the paracetamol label tells you only to consume 2 a at a time then you should stick to that, but my suggestion would be to contact your local GP and explain that the paracetamol does not cure the headache and he may prescribe you with some ibuprofen which you can also buy on the high street but consult your doctor before buying them. hope this information is at any help

Be safe. If the bottle says take two, and your headache does not go away...you should see a doctor. DO NOT take more then the directions on the bottle say to. In some cases...however rare it may be...3 would kill you. But if it doesn't work, consult a doctor

It kinda depends on your body weight also. I'm only 4'11 and I've taken 2 1/2 vicodin and im fine. Be smart though

Almost for sure, 3 wouldn't be deadly. However, in rare cases it could be. Be safe and only take the recommended amount unless told otherwise by a trusted doctor.

I can't believe that no one has asked this question to you yet, but what type of pain killers are you talking about? Prescribed or Over the Counter . Because it does make a huge difference. With Over the Counter stuff, if you are not planning on making a habit of it you can take up to the daily limit in any denomination that you need to. Any more than that and you run the risk of kidney trouble. Prescription Meds, honestly should be taken as prescribed, especially if they contain Opiates. Reason being, opiates slow the breathing and taking too many can cause related problems and you may not even notice you are in trouble until its too late. If you are taking Prescription Meds that don't work for you, call your doctor and ask them to write a different prescription, different drugs work differently on different people. Hope you feel better soon!
