Can Vitamin D be toxic if you take to much?

How much vitamin d can you take in one day ?

  • How much is safe to consume in one day, what if you want to take alot of vitamin D will it all work or will you only absorb a specific amount, and would a larger dose be harmful to take?

  • Answer:

Oh the sunshine vitamin:) Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin. It is a nonessential nutrient because given enough time in the sun people do not need it from foods (For a nutrient to be essential it means the body cannot make it on its own and must be consumed to receive it) So you can get it from sunlight, milk, oily fish and egg yolks (I recommend this over taking supplements) Vitamin D sends signals to three primary target sites: The GI tract to absorb more calcium and phosphorus, the bones to release more, and the kidneys to retain more. These actions maintain blood calcium concentrations and support bone formation. This vitamin is dangerous in excess or little amount (In little amount can cause rickets or osteomalacia=softening of bones) You should follow the Upper limit set by the Dietary Reference Intakes. (I looked it up and it is 50 micrograms/day) An upper limit is the most you can consume without causing any damage... but it's not recommended. The adequate intake is about 5micrograms per day for people 19-50, and 10 micrograms for people aged 51-70) If you consume too much it can raise the concentration of blood calcium. What does this mean? Excess blood calcium tends to precipitate in the soft tissue, forming stones, especially in the kidneys. It can also harden blood vessels and can cause damage to the brain, heart, and lungs (leading to death) Guidelines suggest that people who live in cold climates or those with dark skin should consume more Vitamin D because they may not get an adequate amount from sunlight. I believe I read from a nutrition text book a few years back that there have been people who have died from an over consumption of vitamin D, milk had been improperly fortified with vitamins (The company made a calculation error and put WAY more then the body could handle.. a few people died) :(... Hope that helped! If you need more information please let me know :)

People who are found to be deficient in Vitamin D are prescribed 50,000 units once per week. It's stored in the body, as opposed to most other vitamins, which are excreted in the urine if you get more than you need in a day.
