Do ligaments strengthen after surgery?

Is there any way to strengthen ligaments other than surgery ?

  • Aside from Prolotherapy , Surgery or strengthening the surrounding muscle / tendons is there any way at all you can strengthen ligaments thats available ?

  • Answer:

Weight training, yoga postures, palaties, gymnastic training, and martial art's training can help. There are also tablets that athletes use which help strenghten bones and joints. I can't remember if I saw any for strenghtening ligaments. However these tablets only help a little bit and are used in addition to the other things I mentioned. If an injury caused the weakness, some ligaments can heal on there own with care, depending on the extent of the damage. Some types of injuries can only be helped with surgery. I am currently recovering from reconstuctive knee surgery on my ACL. (Anteria Crutiate Ligament). Ligament injuries take extremely long to heal. You should follow the advice of a doctor who specialises in these types of injuries, if this is the case.

Physiotherapy based circuit training is good to strengthen ligaments, and is quite enjoyable aswell. Last summer, to avoid surgery to my ACL, I did 2 hours a week of circuit training that was orientated around physio of the affected area, and it helped as I now experience minimal problems as the ligament itself has strengthened aswell as hypertrophy of the surrounding muscles (semimembranosus, semitendinosus, sartorius, gastrocnemius, etc) and, I believe and what I remember, have only suffered from one problem in the past 10 months.
