Questions about being a radiologist?
-
Hi there. I'm 14 years old and a freshmen in high school. I have always been interested in a job in the medical field. I'm not doing it for the money (although that is a very nice plus!), though I love science and everything about the human body. I have recently been interested in radiology because I had some X-rays done on me not to long ago and I have always been fascinated at reading the images. The environment of the hospital is also very indescribable and I love being there. I was wondering if radiology is the right thing for me. Also what type of schooling is required? What classes will I have to take in grad school? I'm assuming anatomy and biology and what not, but if you are a radiologist reading this I would love to know. Also all the pros/cons of being one. Is it stressful? I realized most PhD/Md's have very stressful jobs but I was wondering how much vacation time there is too. What are the hours like and would i have time to spend with family and friends? Are radiologists on call? That is a tonnnnnn of questions but if anyone that is a radiologist could answer that for me, I would be extremely grateful. You may not know this but if anyone does what is a very good school for radiology? THANKS! ~ Kaitlin

Answer:
You are very young to be making this decision. First you will need to decide if you want to become a physician (MD). Radiologists are MDs. Becoming a doctor is a very hard and long road. The medical field is very rewarding and interesting but you need to be very dedicated and willing to continue to constantly learn and keep up with new findings. Radiology is a very competitive field. I personally cannot imagine sitting in a dark room for hours on end looking at computer screens! For now you should concentrate on your studies, particularly math and science. Get involved in volunteering and extracurricular activities which will enhance your future resume. Go to college and take all the pre-med courses. Your grades in these courses will determine if you are a competitive medical school applicant. Good luck!
