Blood Types and Transfusions.

Red blood cells have no nucleus so all are the same?

  • I know there are different types of blood like A and B, but if I was A type and took someone elses A type blood would you be unable to see any difference because there's no DNA? Is this why we can do blood transfusions without rejection?

  • Answer:

DNA has nothing to do with the actual reactions in blood typing. That has to do with the sugar chains on the red cell surface. If the two type A bloods were compatible, yes, you would see no difference. But there are other blood groups beside the ABO system and that can cause incompatibility, which is why blood is crossmatched.

Other answers

Though they have no nuclei red calls do have a number of antigenic features. The most prominent ones are the ABO groupings, but there are other more minor ones that can induce a reaction.
