Optometrist vs Immunologist?
-
Yes, I know these two professions are very different, but as of right now these are the two that I am considering. So recently I've been talking with my parents and my aunt, who is an Optometrist, and it seems like a very interesting & rewarding career. I'm not sure how hard Optometry school is, but it doesn't seem as hard as medical school from what I read on other forums. Also the thought of not having to do the years of post med school internships and residencies is very appealing. My other interest is Immunology, since I have suffered from allergies, asthma, and a fatal peanut allergy my whole life. Being an Immunologist would be great because I get to help people, or even help research to hopefully develop a cure for food allergies, which would be amazing. However, medical school seems so demanding, and the internships and residencies seem like hell from what people say. I guess I'm just wondering, is it worth all that extra effort to get a job that may or may not be as rewarding as I feel it can be? Also, how well compensated would I be in each profession? I know money isn't everything, but if I'm spending all that time in school I better be able to make enough to make a good living and pay off any debts. Please if anyone who has any experience with either of these professions could offer some insight I would really appreciate it. Thank you for your time :)

Answer:
I am not in either, but I am in medical school. It is hard, but I enjoy it. I just wanted to let you know about another option, particularly if research is something that really interests you. Instead of getting a MD or DO degree or an OD you can consider an immunology Ph.D. My immunology professor at my med school is not a physician but has a Ph.D and seems to enjoy it. I believe the pay is pretty good, although not what a practicing specialist might make, but professors are usually well paid.
