What's it really like being a doctor?
-
I'm thinking of become a doctor after I leave school and I want to know what it's really like? Is it anything like Scrubs or Grey's Anatomy etc? Is it true that although u make a lot of money that you don't have time to enjoy because you're always on call? If anyone knows anyone that's a doctor do they like their job or do they wish that they should be doing something else? Should I forget about going to the medical field? I really want to know, please help!! Thanks

Answer:
It is defiantly not like TV shows. It's a lot of schools and extremely long hours until you become an attending. After that, your hours depend on your field and where you work. ER docs are obviously on call alot while psychiatrists are usually able to have a 9-5 schedule. If you have your own practice, you make your own hours. I don't know any doctors making less than $100k, but most did not join the profession to make money. If you are in it for the money you won't last. It's so much work and about $200k if not more in schooling which takes forever to pay off. If you want to make money, go into business. Go volunteer and go get a job in a doctor's office or hospital. You won't get into medical school without experience and you do not want to commit the time and energy it takes to get in (very competitive) just to find out later you don't like it. If you are smart, do well in school, have a desire to help people that are sick at the highest level and the financial and social freedom to spend years in school, then you should pursue it. If not, a physician's assistant or NP might be right for you.

you have to love science first, not tv at university, the scrub course was organic chemistry, where the profs laughingly informed wannabes that he was going to flunk half of them and do society a favor (organic chemistry is pretty difficult for a lot of people)... you have to be serious, studious, and prepared to suffer, then it will pay off

Forget what you see on TV. It's not funny like Scrubs, or constant drama like ER, or anything close to House. (I saw him doing brain surgery as I flipped channels... like we'd even let an internist into the OR - hah!) The income can be good, but you work very hard for it. You'll need to train for a minimum of 11 years after high school, and much of the training is brutal. Once you are established in practice, your lifestyle becomes what you want it to be - some physicians I know work all the time, others of us have more of a balance. There are physicians who love what they do, and those who don't, just like any other profession. It's tough to leave, though, after you've invested decades in training and building a practice. If an easy lifestyle is what you're after, then forget medicine. If you love the idea of understanding how human bodies work, what makes them sick, and being able to guide patients toward better health, then go for it. Physicians are a very driven bunch of people. We have very high standards for ourselves, academically and professionally (as well as ethically). If you re driven to be successful and love science, then consider medicine. Good luck with whatever you choose to pursue.

it is a lot of hard work and very stressful. it is not an easy life and there is always more study to do for the rest of yr life. the stories and tv series are really so glamorized and sexed up, it is not true really. try some work experience in a hospital before u take up med studies.

well, i had a passion to become a doc everysince i was a kid, up until this day i make sure i do not regret it, and treat myself to the best of anything so i would not be stressed. i am doing my master's next year then my Ph D a while after: to become a peadiatrician but as of now i study and work as a part time nurse, and it is not horrible at all..we will all have our ups and downs...that's life. no one said it would be easy, but you have to make the best out of whatever you persue..regardless. as for wondering if it is like grey's anatomy lol..now i have to tell you, i love that show and i often wished working in the hospital is that dramatic...haha..if only, it would take so much pressure off of me, and like the people in grey's anatomy i would be able to make out with any cute doc that i like. lol (which is against the rule) hope you persue you future endeavours dear * do your best
