Is there REALLY a nursing shortage?

Are RN Jobs plentiful...is there really a nursing shortage?

  • Answer:

Only in a few areas is there NOT a shortage and that is due to the employer trying to find experienced RNs with BSNs. Right now there is an abundance of new grads and many have not found a job in the 2 years post graduating. Those with BSNs are having better luck. The employers can now be picky with all the applicants. Several hospitals have closed during the past few years. Many, many clinics have closed. Home health jobs have been replaced by lesser trained and lower paid techs such as EMTs. Paramedics have also been trying to replace nurses for many years and are succeeding in some places as hospital strive to cut cost with cheaper labor. Although there is not that common in states where the Paramedic has a very limited scope of practice. Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee are the hardest hit for RNs being replaced by the lesser trained.

There is, and has been, a shortage of qualified RNs in America for decades. When I was a nursing supervisor in a mid-sized hospital thirty years ago, I had difficulty even meeting minimal staffing requirements. That was true in New York, and in Alaska, and in Oklahoma, Virginia and Wyoming. It's worse today all across the country.
