How to become a sports medicine physician?

What is the best route to become a Sports Medicine Physician?

  • I am currently in my second year of college at the University of Houston, and recently (last year) decided to change majors from Electrical Engineering to Sports Medicine/ Kinesiology. I understand this is quite of a change but I have done the research and have my mind set on this major. I plan on becoming a Sports Medicine Physician, however, have a few questions about the route to becoming said position. I understand the whole hiearchy/ladder of education which I must achieve (undergrad, med-school, 3yr residency). However, I was curious as to what should be accomplished inbetween each. I plan on majoring in Kines-Exercise Science for my Undergrad with a minor in Biology. But, other than that, I really am unsure of what I should be planning for, for the future. Any advice on the specifics invloved along the way? When I should look for internships, how I should look, etc? Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Answer:

Both EE and Sports Med are great areas:) I would get exposure to areas of your interest for internships. Look for the internships that may waive your tuition, if possible. Helping poor, underserved areas for internships will look good on your resume:) plus there is a need to serve the underserved. Go talk to an area doctor that specializes in sports med, that person may be able to give you some insight. Good Luck:)
