B. Sc. is notionally 4 years by 30 hours contact. However that ocntact time is supposed to be (and rarely is) matched by self directed study, asisgnments etc). But let's call it 9000 hours. A Ph. D is notionally considered 3 years at 40 hours. Call it 5500 hours. M.D. varies a lot depending on where you study and whether you get recognition of prior learning from your parsitology stuff. But you could expect another 6000 hours minimum and could easily double that. _____________ >>>> However, at the PhD level, there's the little >>>> matter of a thesis, which really can't be measured in >>>> terms of credit hours. Which is precisely why I raised the little point that a PhD is NOTIONALLY considered 3 years at 40 hours. 40 hours is the ‘standard’ working week in the developed. Hence a notional 3 years at 40 hours means 3 years, full time. No mention was made of credit hours WRT a PhD. >>>>And even still, you're talking about a full-time >>> commitment for 8 to 12 …., it seems ridiculous to try to >>>> figure out how many hours it will take. If that is your answer to the question as asked, that you can't figure it out, then you should have probably said so. Or perhaps not answered at all. I made a bona fide attempt to answer the question. >>>>Oh, and if you'd actually looked at the source you cited OH, I actually did actually look at the actual source.. >>>>> you might notice that three years is considered the >>>>> MINIMUM to complete a PhD, not the norm. What you failed to comprehend apparently is that the webpage also doesn’t say it ISN'T the ‘norm’ either. I know it can be tricky, but when you finally do your stats subjects you will learn that the ‘norm’ and the minimum can actually be the same, especially in cases like this. Just as the norm for an undergraduate degree is 4 years and the minimum for the same degree will usually also be 4 years. I was basing my statement that it was the norm on my experience. Not on any claim the webpage made or did not make in that regard. I wasn’t even aware the webpage existed when I made that statement. I only sought the webpage after you made your claims that a PhD is universally longer than 3 years. >>>>>By the way, when you say something like "30 hours," >>>>> is that classroom hours per term? Per week? Yes, it is ‘classroom hours’ or, as tertiary institutions more commonly refer to it, contact hours. I stated that quite explicitly. And although I didn’t make it clear, I figured anyone with knowledge of universities and colleges would realise that 30 hours classroom time per term simply doesn’t apply to a science degree. The only reasonable interpretation is, of course, contact hours per week.
