What kind of things would be good for me to do in college that would be good for my med school application"?
-
In high school, I was on newspaper for two years. My senior year I was a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters. What kind of things would be good for me to do in college to look good for med school? I was thinking of becoming a mentor again since I liked it so much. I've also done volunteer work with church.. What kind of things would look good? Thanks

Answer:
Be your self, if you enjoy mentoring and editing/newspaper, then definitely do more of that! Sure you can follow the formula- volunteer at hospital, become EMT etc. But these things won't make you stand out, everyone does this. To make your self stand out more spend most of your extracurricular time doing something out of the ordinary like working on the the college newspaper, or like volunteering overseas or going on a missions trip, studying abroad or something like that. But I agree with the previous post, grades are most important! Oh and try to do some research or independent study with a professor!

Ben is not far from the truth. Talk to your counselor (the college I went to actually had a counselor just for the pre-meds) about internships in hospitals. If you actually work in an ER, even if it's just scut work, you may help establish sincerity about helping people. If you are willing to get pulled out of college for a couple of years, you may want to talk to a military recruiter about being trained as a combat medic. Actually saving lives in some real life capacity would be pretty impressive on a med school application. Ultimately, the biggest hurdles to getting into med school are your grades and your MCAT scores. If you don't ace courses like Chem, Bio, Orgo, etc., you are in real trouble. Premeds tend to take courses like the history of film with the football team to boost their GPAs in general. I have known pre-meds who did absolutely nothing but get good grades and got into good med schools. Finally, if you are still in high school, consider applying to programs at Boston University and a few other schools that allow you to do college and med school in 6 or 7 years, but you know leaving high school that there is a place in med school as long as you don't mess it up.
