Do you think you are a better person because you have a job with health insurance?
-
For businesses to have to pay for health care is not an obligation, they can choose to stop doing it any time they want and then what? Every time there are more and more businesses that are choosing not to offer it, therefore less and less jobs that offer it. At this point there are only so many jobs with benefits for so many more people equally as qualified on any field, if you have health insurance through your job you are LUCKY, not a better person than anyone else who doesn't have it. It's not a matter of "getting a job" If you don't have it you have to buy it and the prices are astronomical. Or the coverage very poor. The system does not work.

Answer:
Absolutely not! The right wing propaganda machine and their "personal responsibility" mantra play right into the hands of the health-care industry and their powerful lobby that oppose reform and desperately wants health care to remain as it is right now. (obscenely profitable) The right wing just loves for people that are not financialy secure to feel that it is somehow THEIR FAULT. Myth 1: Not many Americans are uninsured. Not true. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that more than 41 million Americans do not have health insurance. That's one out of every seven Americans. Myth 2: Most uninsured people are unemployed. Not true. Nearly eight out of 10 uninsured people are in working families, but are either not offered health insurance benefits or cannot afford to pay their portion of the cost. Myth 3: There are no serious health consequences when someone lacks health insurance. Not true. Uninsured women with breast cancer and men with colon cancer are twice as likely to die from these diseases as insured people with the same health problems. Myth 4: The uninsured can always get care if they really need it. Not true. Unfortunately, uninsured people delay getting care, live with illnesses longer and even die younger than those with health insurance. Myth 5: There is no economic risk to going without health insurance. Not true. Not having health insurance is a leading cause of personal bankruptcy, because most families cannot afford to pay for medical care out of pocket. Myth 6: The number of uninsured has not increased over the past decade. Not true. The number of uninsured has increased by nearly 10 million over the past decade, and rose by 1.2 million between 2000 and 2001. Myth 7: The number of uninsured Americans does not affect those who have health insurance. Not true. No one is immune from the consequences of so many Americans not having health coverage. While many hospitals provide charity care to uninsured patients, studies show that insured patients often pay for this care indirectly through higher charges. Moreover, the large number of uninsured patients often overwhelms hospital emergency rooms and other health facilities. Myth 8: The uninsured are mostly careless young people. Not true. Three out of four uninsured adults are over the age of 25. In fact, middle-aged and older Americans are among the fastest growing group of Americans with no health insurance coverage. http://thyroid.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.CoverThe%0D%0AUninsured.org

No. But I do believe we are very fortunate to have health coverage. And very good coverage at that. Thanks to the Union. Edit: Bob O... Excellent post.

ROFLMAO!!! Great question!!!! There are people who feel righteous about their health insurance until one of their kids or a spouse gets a terminal illness, and then they have their hands out to the government!

Delina, you ROCK! Most insurances have poor coverage anyway, I don't know anyone except state employees that have great coverage, and then people should be holding their breath that no one gets sick. I'm sure all the people on here who have great health insurance paid for by their employers are all white and live in the suburbs.

I agree, the health care industry is nothing but a white coated reaper.

No I do not. I own a small company. I pay the full amount of health insurance and pay the full coverage for my employees. If you want to hire quality people you need to compensate them appropriately. I do not want health issues interfering with running the business, and it is the right thing to do. In the technology arena we do have a bit of a disadvantage over the guys that hire off shore or H1B folks with no benefits. If we had universal coverage, most business owners would benefit from a level playing field.

I went to the military for 12 years, paid for my college with my GI Bill, have 2 degrees, and run my own Sports Business. I pay for my own Health Care and also cover 75% of the premiums for my employees coverage. HARD WORK DOES PAY OFF!! Am I a better person? NO !!! Did I take responsibiblity and made well thought out choices in life? Yes Doesnt hurt that I earn over 300k a year from my business and another 867k last year from my gambling wagers.

A better person, no...better off, yes!!!

I know that kind of stuff doesn't make me better than another but I am a democrat. I think lack of humility is common is some group of people but in there life what they are sending out is coming back to them in ways they are probably not even aware of such as them living in a world where others are very judgemental of them. Have you ever watched the Jerry Springer show? the people are mirrors to each other. The only way they can get out of hell is to start treating others as they would like to be treated. That seems like something used to manipulate people to be good but it really is important in the creation of the kind of life we either enjoy or dispise. I haven't read the transcript I posted below & it says it is not complete. I did listen to the show & he says that for economical reassons it makes sense to have coverage on everyone. We waste billions a year that we can cut & actually have that money for this to pay for itself....well, people who would walk over a person who falls in the street are the same people who would go listen & cheer on Rush Limbaugh but also the same people who have family who will not care for them if they end up handicapt & out of work. Karma is the nature of life balancing itself out & even OJ who we thought got away with murder is not spending his life in prison. So self centered people who think they are better than others will know what it feels like to be treated as they treat others.

Not a better person, just a healthier and more comfortable one. I use the VA, great benefit for 4 years of service so long ago.
